At the beginning of this semester, if you as had asked me what was meaningful learning I would not have had an idea of what to tell you. But now I have a completely different outlook on the topic. Meaningful learning is using new and old ways to teach students. This opens ways of teaching that some wouldn't expect to use. It allows students to interact in the teachings, allows teachers to use new technology, and also inter-grade it in with old teachings.
The following is each of the five characteristics with a brief descriptions on ways that I would use them in the classroom.
Active:
The way that I would use the active characteristic is by creating a lesson that the students could use with the smart board. An example would be a math lesson for kindergartners. I would create a lesson allowing the students to move apples from the ground to the basket. This allows them to learn/practice counting, as well as allow them to be hands on with learning. Also I found that using wall wisher or a voice thread would also be a great interaction tool for students.
Constructive:
Continuing with the apple theme lesson on the smart board, and after each child has had a chance to be hands on with the board. I would allow the students the chance to construct their own problems. An example would be that a student goes to the board and ask another to move five apples in the basket and four out of it. This allows the children a chance to help solve the problem but also show they understand how to do it. Also another way to be constructive is to use the voice thread tools for the students to create problems and have the others show how they would solve the problems.
Cooperative:
A lesson that could be cooperative is a reading lesson on the smart board. The class will read a story then review it on the board. Pictures will be on the smart board and as a class; they will put the pictures of the story in order. This would be used more at a first grade level for being able to do sequence. I also think that a using a wiki page would be great way to maintain structure with lessons as well as getting students to work together and stay focused on the lessons.
Authentic and Intentional:
After reading the characteristics I feel that authentic and intentional could run together. I would provide a computer center in the classroom which would allow students to explore certain activities on their own or with a partner. This allows the students to choose what they want to learn and use what they already have learned.
